Jerry Buttimer, Class of 1968, was selected for the St. Ambrose University Athletic Hall of Fame.
St. Ambrose University announced that Jerry Buttimer has been selected for their Athletic Hall of Fame.
Jerry was a Boston Marathon qualifier and shattered several school records. He crushed
the five-mile cross-country record in 1970 by nearly 45 seconds at the George Wyth Road
Race, finishing in a time of 25:19. He also set the school’s three-mile record with a time
of 15:00 minutes.

Jerry’s St. Ambrose records stood for decades but were set aside when distances moved
to the metric system. The current 8k school record is 24:54 and Jerry’s mark of 25:19
would remain the second-fastest time in school history. He qualified for a spot in the
Boston Marathon by winning the 20.9-mile Geneseo-to-Quad-City Marathon. Jerry was
the Senior captain of the track and cross-country teams.
Aside from his athletic accomplishments, Jerry was an outstanding student and
campus leader at St. Ambrose. He had a very successful professional career as a CPA
and entrepreneur.
At Mendel, Jerry was a standout cross-country and track-distance runner. He was on relay
teams that captured firsts at the prestigious Brother Rice Relays and had many, many top
finishes in Catholic League competitions.

Jerry was also a stalwart on the wrestling team.
Congratulations, Jerry!
