As the holiday lights sparkled and the spirit of the season filled the air, members of the Mendel Alumni Association reunited to share laughter, stories, and friendship at the 2024 Christmas R.O.M.E.O. (Random Old Monarchs Eating Out). On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Monarchs from across the decades gathered at The Original Pancake House in Orland Park—graciously hosted by the family of Don LaRoche (Class of ’64)—to celebrate the cherished bonds forged at Mendel, no matter how many years have passed.

From the seasoned graduates of the 1950s and 1960s to the younger alumni of the 1970s and 1980s, the evening served as a vivid reminder that time may move forward, but the Monarch spirit is timeless. Amid warm smiles and welcoming handshakes, classmates caught up, swapped stories of school days long gone, and took comfort in a kindred legacy that still unites them. The delicious menu of hearty comfort food mirrored the heartening fellowship found throughout the room.

In a true gesture of the season’s generosity, attendees brought hats and gloves to help those in need this winter. These heartfelt contributions, soon to be delivered by Bob Fioretti (Class of ’71), reflected the Mendel tradition of caring for others—a legacy of compassion that extends far beyond school walls.

As the evening drew to a close, the Monarchs gathered together, voices rising in harmony for a rousing rendition of the Mendel Fight Song. For a few shining moments, time stood still. The old halls, laughter, and spirit of Mendel came rushing back, washing over everyone like a warm wave of memory and pride. In that final chorus, they were not just alumni or old classmates—they were Monarchs, forever united by the songs and traditions that shaped them.

To all who joined, donated, sang, and celebrated: MERRY CHRISTMAS, MONARCHS! May the warmth of this special evening and the echoes of the Mendel Fight Song carry you through the holidays and into a bright new year ahead.
