Before the house parties, there was the glory on the fields, and we can thank the Class of ’75 for the mantra that kept Mendel a top contender and brought a revolution to Mendel, rewriting the rulebook with their prowess in sports. But there’s more to their story than meets the eye. Let’s journey back to 1971 and uncover the epic tale of “Blue Smoke”!

When these young monarchs stepped foot into Mendel, they were destined to become a force to be reckoned with. As freshmen, they emerged as the most honored, talented, and audacious track class ever witnessed. And oh, did they leave their mark!

In the dark halls of Southshore HS, during an indoor meet, something magical happened. With each victorious stride, the champions began chanting “Blue Smoke.” It became their rallying cry, echoing through buses, cars, and the hearts of everyone present. The world heard it during their electrifying warmup and cool down laps—”Blue Smoke” reverberated with unmatched intensity.

These fierce competitors embraced their rebellious spirit, defying the conventional norms of Mendel. In mismatched and opposing team sweats and equipment, they fearlessly took on their rivals. Gym clothes and laughter adorned their faces, as they stared down their outfitted opponents. They arrived with swagger, booming the words “Blue MFing Smoke” for all to hear. And boy, did they deliver!

Their energy was stoked by their incredible coach, McAllister, and the varsity team, who embraced their unbridled passion. Trash talk became an art form, a testament to their unshakeable confidence. Track championships piled up, seven in total, conquering every event but one in the CCL Championships. Their dominance knew no bounds.

Thus, in 1971, the legend of “Blue Smoke” was born. It became more than a chant or a nickname; it represented an era of unrivaled courage, audacity, and triumph. This legacy continues to inspire and fuel the younger monarchs who follow in their footsteps.

So, let us pay homage to the pioneers of “Blue Smoke,” the Class of ’75, and their indomitable spirit that forever etched their names in the annals of Mendel history.
