We are excited to share the inspiring work of one of our own, Pete Callahan, from the class of 1962. Pete’s journey has taken him far from the halls of Mendel, but his dedication to making a positive impact on the world remains stronger than ever. Wells of Life is a faith-based Catholic Church-supported charity that focuses on drilling wells and teaching sanitation and hygiene practices in rural Uganda. The organization was founded on the heartbreaking reality that one out of five children in Uganda does not live to see their fifth birthday due to contaminated water sources. Pete and his team are determined to change this grim statistic.

How Wells of Life Makes a Difference: Wells of Life employs a holistic approach to water development. Their work includes:

The Urgent Need for Clean Water: Access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet millions of people worldwide, including many in Uganda, still lack this basic necessity. Contaminated water sources in rural areas lead to waterborne diseases, causing immense suffering and preventable deaths. Wells of Life is working tirelessly to address this crisis by providing clean and sustainable water sources to communities in need.

Drilling Wells: The organization installs wells equipped with hand pumps, ensuring a reliable and safe source of clean water for communities.

Sanitation and Hygiene Education: Recognizing that access to clean water alone is not enough, Wells of Life educates local residents about sanitation and hygiene practices. This knowledge is crucial in preventing waterborne diseases and promoting overall well-being.

Empowering Communities: Wells of Life actively involves the local community in the well drilling and maintenance process, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability.

Get Involved: Pete Callahan and Wells of Life invite all Mendel Alumni to join in their mission of providing clean water and hope to the people of Uganda. There are several ways you can make a difference:

Donate: Your financial support can help fund the drilling of wells and the education of communities.
Spread the Word: Share Pete’s story and the work of Wells of Life with your friends, family, and social networks.

Volunteer: If you’re in the San Juan Capistrano area, consider volunteering your time and skills to support the organization’s efforts.

As proud Mendel Alumni, let us rally behind Pete Callahan and Wells of Life in their noble quest to bring clean water and a brighter future to the people of Uganda. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and continue the tradition of improving our community and the world.

Here’s a short video of Pete explaining why he joined this charity, which had drilled 148 wells as of 2008. He is now the organization’s volunteer president, which has drilled over 1,300 wells, all of which are still functioning thanks to its ongoing maintenance program, bringing clean water access and teaching sanitation and hygiene to over 1.3 million of our poorest brothers and sisters.
