Mendel Catholic Prep Celebrates John W. Boyer as 2024 Man of the Year

We are delighted to announce that John W. Boyer, an alumnus from the class of ’64, has been honored as the 2024 Man of the Year. This accolade is bestowed upon individuals who have shown exceptional dedication and have made significant contributions to their field.

John Boyer is renowned for his remarkable tenure as the Dean of the University of Chicago, a position he held with distinction from 1992 until 2023. His service of over three decades marks him as the longest-serving dean in the college’s storied history, a testament to his enduring commitment to education and leadership.

Throughout his tenure, John’s achievements were numerous and impactful. He played a pivotal role in strengthening Alumni Relations, ensuring that past students remained connected and engaged with the university’s community. His efforts to increase funding for faculty chairs and student scholarship funds have been transformative, providing resources that enriched the academic environment and made higher education accessible to a broader cohort of students.

John’s commitment to inclusivity led to a significant increase in the diversity of student classes, enriching the campus culture and fostering a more comprehensive educational experience for all. Moreover, his initiative to bring renowned scholars to the university to teach undergraduate courses has elevated the institution’s academic standing and provided students with invaluable learning opportunities.

One of John’s crowning achievements was his focus on the expansion and enhancement of study abroad programs. His deep involvement in the establishment of the University of Chicago Center in Paris and the development of numerous other programs and internships has seen the study abroad rates triple since 1992. This initiative has allowed students to gain global perspectives and experiences, which are invaluable in today’s interconnected world.

After stepping down as Dean in 2023, John continues to serve the University of Chicago as a Senior Advisor to the President and holds the esteemed position of Martin A. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor. His ongoing contribution to the academic community remains as influential as ever.
