On a memorable Thursday, February 22, 2024, thirty distinguished Monarchs convened at Ballydoyle Irish Pub and Restaurant in Downers Grove, Illinois, for an evening of camaraderie and reminiscence. The event, part of the cherished R.O.M.E.O. (Random Old Monarchs Eating Out) series, was a vibrant gathering where stories spanning decades were shared among friends old and new.

Hosted by Bill Duffy (’64), the evening was a testament to the enduring spirit of the Mendel community. Attendees shared updates on their careers, families, and interests, bridging gaps of thirty to sixty years with warmth and enthusiasm.

The night also featured updates from the Mendel Alumni Association and a spirited rendition of the Mendel Fight Song, further strengthening the bonds of brotherhood. In a heartwarming display of generosity, Mike Connolly (’60) won the Split the Pot Raffle and donated half of his winnings back to the community. The collective effort saw the donation of thirty bottles of liquor, which will be bundled into baskets for an upcoming auction at the All-Class Reunion on May 3.

Looking ahead, the next R.O.M.E.O. event is set to take place in the Northwest Suburbs, and we are on the lookout for a host. If you’re interested in being part of this wonderful tradition, please reach out to Mike Dreznes at [email protected] or (707) 344-5878.

Let’s continue to build on the legacy of friendship and support that defines our Monarch community. We hope to see you at the next gathering!
