Mendel High School Alumni Association Hosts Special Mass Honoring Southside Chicago Catholic High School Veterans & First Responders Killed in the Line of Duty

On Thursday evening, November 14, 2024, the Mendel High School Alumni Association held a heartfelt and powerful Mass at St. Cajetan Church to honor Southside Chicago Catholic High School Veterans and First Responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The event, organized by Andy Youpel, Chairman of the Mendel Alumni Association Veterans and First Responder Committee, and a dedicated team of alumni, was the result of months of careful planning. Committee members included veterans and alumni from various graduating classes: Jim Chevalier (‘66), Mike Connolly (‘60), Mike Dreznes (‘68), John Fanning (‘68), Tom Gavin (‘67), Bill Kushner (‘71), Terry Gainer (‘65), Kelvin Lovely (‘78), Pat Regan (‘68), Marty Gainer (‘70), Greg Dillon (‘66), and Ken Kolar (‘71).

A Mass of Honor and Remembrance
The moving service was concelebrated by Father Ken Budzikowski, Pastor of St. Cajetan; Fr. Don Lewandowski, O.S.A. (‘61); and Deacon Joe Roccasalva. The procession, led by Bagpipe Major Matt McKee, included the Color Guard from American Legion Post #854, as well as representatives from Southside Catholic high schools, including Mendel, St. Rita, Brother Rice, Little Flower, Leo, Marist, St. Ignatius, and Mt. Carmel. Each school carried posters listing the names of their fallen heroes.

The Mass featured heartfelt moments, including readings by CPD Officer Kurrin Beamon and CFD Firefighter Rich O’Connor. Marty Gainer (‘70) offered a poignant reflection on the sacrifices of these “High School Heroes,” while Lt. Col. Kevin Lovell, US Army (Ret.), delivered an inspiring keynote address, reminding attendees of the daily sacrifices made by Veterans and First Responders.

Music and Tribute
The music, led by St. Cajetan Music Director Joe Kregor, with cantor Katie Faris and the St. Cajetan Choir, combined patriotic and spiritual themes to create a captivating atmosphere. The evening concluded with trumpeter Bob Wolff’s haunting rendition of “Taps,” leaving attendees deeply moved.

A Community Effort
The Mendel Alumni Association extends its heartfelt gratitude to St. Cajetan Liturgy Coordinator Colette Gurin for her unwavering dedication to ensuring the success of this unforgettable event.

This special Mass stands as a testament to the unity and enduring gratitude of the Southside Chicago Catholic community, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to others.
