Dear Mendel Alumni,
On April 25, 2025, our Mendel Catholic High School community beamed with pride as our beloved Brother Jack Hibbard, O.S.A. (’69), was celebrated at the 2025 Augustinian Gala for his incredible 46 years of service to the Augustinian order. Held at the iconic Drake Hotel in Chicago, the evening kicked off with a warm reception at 6:30pm, followed by a heartfelt dinner at 7:45pm, uniting alumni, friends, and supporters to honor Brother Jack’s lifelong devotion.
A Mendel Legend: Brother Jack
Brother Jack, a 1969 Mendel graduate, has lived a life steeped in the faith, service, and community spirit we all cherish from our alma mater. With his uncle, Rev. John Sotak, O.S.A., ordained in 1955, Jack’s Augustinian roots run deep, guiding him to profess his vows in 1977. By 2025, he marked an astounding 46 years of service, a milestone that the gala celebrated with great joy.
Brother Jack’s impact on education and spiritual growth is legendary. As Dean of Students at St. Rita High School and Cascia Hall Preparatory School, he shaped countless young lives. His introduction of Kairos Retreats to these schools touched thousands, fostering deep spiritual connections. Beyond the classroom, Brother Jack served as Prior, Subprior, and Treasurer in Augustinian communities, leading with wisdom and heart.

A Night of Celebration
The 2025 Augustinian Gala, hosted by the Midwest Augustinians, was a vibrant tribute to service, raising support for vocations, retired friars, and missions in Peru. The Drake Hotel’s elegant ambiance set the stage for an evening of fellowship and reflection. Alongside Brother Jack, the gala honored Marybeth Carroll, Chuck Engvall, and Edward J. Chapman, each recognized for their contributions to the Augustinian mission.
The night was filled with stories of Brother Jack’s mentorship and spiritual guidance, resonating deeply with Mendel alumni in attendance. For those of us who know him, it was a powerful reminder of how one Mendel Monarch can embody our school’s values and inspire generations.
A Legacy That Endures
Brother Jack’s recognition at the gala speaks volumes about the enduring power of a Mendel education. His 46 years of service—from launching Kairos Retreats to leading Augustinian communities—reflect the Augustinian ideals of truth, unity, and love. The event was not only a celebration of his achievements but a call to continue supporting the Augustinian mission that Jack holds dear.
If you couldn’t attend, you can still send your congratulations to Brother Jack through the Midwest Augustinians at www.midwestaugustinians.org. Your kind words will mean so much to our cherished alumnus.
