On June 7, 2025, the Buckley Homestead in Lowell, Indiana, came alive with the echoes of the past during the “History Speaks: Civil War Stories” event, hosted by Lake County Parks from 10 AM to 4 PM. This free event featured historical meet-and-greets, live encampments, food vendors, Jr. Soldier Training Field, authors in the park, presentations & exhibits, and interactive activities. The day celebrated history with the poignant reminder, “Don’t make me repeat myself” – History, inviting all to learn from the past.

The Buckley Homestead, established by Irish immigrants Dennis and Catherine Buckley in 1849, grew from 79 acres to a 520-acre dairy farm supplying milk to Chicago markets in the early 20th century. Donated to Lake County Parks in 1977 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, it has long been a venue for historical reenactments. “History Speaks” likely evolved from a 2024 Civil War reenactment revival, organized with the Northwest Indiana Civil War Roundtable and Crown Point Community Library, featuring 60 reenactors and authentic encampments, reflecting a renewed focus on Civil War education.

Among the attendees were several proud Mendel alumni, turning the event into an impromptu mini Romeo reunion. We had a few monarchs attend “History Speaks” on Saturday. Herb Smith III ’64, Andy Yopel ’66, Rick Zarr ’71, and Bill Taylor ’66 graced the event, adding a special touch of Mendel pride to the historical festivities. Their gathering echoed the spirit of Mendel Romeo events, bringing together alumni to share memories and strengthen bonds.
