Mendel Alumni Set Sail: A Memorable Evening on the Chicago River

September 11, 2025
On a beautiful Tuesday, September 9, 2025 night, the Mendel Catholic Prep Alumni Association hosted an unforgettable gathering that brought together proud Men of Mendel for a special cruise on the Chicago River. Alumni and guests embarked on the maiden voyage of the “Augustinians on a Boat” event, with the Midwest Augustinians as the esteemed Guests of Honor aboard the Ft. Dearborn Boat.
Through the generosity of Terry Johnson and Chicago Line Cruises, the Mendel Alumni Association used this opportunity to thank the Augustinians for their hard work in molding successful men out of the boys who entered the halls of Mendel High School from 1951 to 1988. The evening kicked off with departures from two convenient locations. The Ft. Dearborn Boat set sail promptly at 6:30 PM from 465 N. McClurg Court, nestled in the hidden Ogden Slip branch of the Chicago River, just behind Pinstripes Cafe. For those coming from the south side, shuttle buses departed from St. Rita High School at 7740 South Western Avenue at 5:00 PM, ensuring everyone could join the festivities with ease.
Over the course of the two-hour cruise, participants enjoyed stunning views of Chicago’s iconic skyline as the boat glided along the river. The weather cooperated fully, and the open bar, good food, and good drink blended well with the good company of St. Rita High School staff, altar servers and their families, as well as Mendel Alumni and Midwest Augustinians. Spirits were high as attendees reconnected, shared stories from their time at the historic college prep high school, and celebrated the lasting bonds formed under the guidance of the Augustinian Order.
During the evening, Tom Gavin, President of the Mendel Alumni Association, announced that the association was making a $5,000 donation for the welfare of retired Augustinians who taught at Mendel High School.
Space was limited on the Ft. Dearborn Boat, and the event filled up quickly—a testament to the strong community spirit among Mendel graduates. Attendees praised the relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful evening weather, and the opportunity to honor the Augustinians in such a unique setting. The tour ended much too soon, and hopefully the Augustinians in attendance enjoyed this small attempt by the Mendel Alumni Association to thank them for their efforts to make them Mendel Gentlemen during their high school years.
A special shoutout goes to Mike Dreznes and Terry Lynch for their tireless efforts in organizing this event. For any comments or inquiries about future gatherings, reach him at (707) 344-5878.
