Vatican Documentary Highlights Local Roots of Pope Leo XIV

November 12, 2025
A compelling new documentary produced by the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See, in partnership with the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Apostolate El Sembrador Nueva Evangelización (ESNE), takes viewers on the life-journey of Pope Leo XIV. The film chronicles his early years in Dolton, Illinois, through the voices of his brothers Louis and John, schoolmates, teachers, and longtime parish friends — all tracing the formation of a man who now leads the worldwide Church.
The documentary begins with his childhood in the Chicago region, follows him through local schools and parishes, and moves on to his missionary service and global assignments. It illustrates how his native community shaped his faith and vocation.
For alumni and friends of Mendel, this work serves as both a tribute and a reminder: a boy from the Chicago suburbs rose to the highest office in the Catholic Church, rooted in the same faith-and-community values many of us share.
