A Monarch Leads the Way: Fredrick H. Bates ’76 Honored with 2026 Vanguard Award

There are moments when a name feels bigger than a headline—and for the Mendel community, this is one of them.
Judge Fredrick H. Bates, Class of 1976, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Vanguard Award from the Chicago Bar Association, one of the highest honors recognizing leadership in advancing equity and access within the legal profession. The award was presented on April 21, 2026, at the Union League Club of Chicago, placing Judge Bates among a select group of changemakers shaping the future of law in our city.
For those who walked the halls of Mendel, this recognition feels both extraordinary and entirely fitting.
From his early days as a Monarch to his current role on the bench in the Cook County Circuit Court, Judge Bates has built a career defined by purpose. His work has consistently focused on opening doors—especially in spaces where opportunity has historically been limited. As a past president of the Cook County Bar Association and a founding force behind the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms, he has helped reshape how the legal profession recruits, mentors, and elevates diverse talent.
This isn’t the kind of impact that happens overnight. It’s built case by case, decision by decision, and often behind the scenes—through mentorship, advocacy, and the steady push to make systems better than they were before. Over the years, Judge Bates has also dedicated his time to more than 20 nonprofit organizations, extending his influence well beyond the courtroom and into the broader community.
What makes this moment resonate even more is how clearly it reflects the values that have long defined Mendel: leadership, service, and the belief that success means lifting others along the way.
For the Class of ’76, this honor is personal. For the entire Mendel community, it’s a reminder of what a Monarch can become—and what a Monarch can change.
Congratulations, Judge Bates. Your legacy continues to grow, and your Mendel family is proud.
